Burlington-based Dynatech Corp. is changing its name to Acterna Corp., as it readies for its first sale of stock on the Nasdaq exchange this fall.
The company, which has been in business since 1959, produces gear that helps telecommunications companies test their networks. Other companies in that market such as Boston-based Teradyne have blossomed as demand has grown for the Internet, converged voice, data and video communications, wireless communications, and fiber-optic systems, spurred by deregulation of the telecommunications industry
Acterna sells more than 100 instruments, including products that monitor the performance of optical transmission equipment, broadband access technologies such as xDSL and cable modems, and data, voice, wireless and cable networks. It competes with California-based Agilent Technologies, Tektronix in Oregon, and Japan's Arnitsu Corp.
Network technicians run Acterna gear in their operations centers, getting access to test systems within networks and performing either automated or manual tests.
Connecticut market research firm Dataquest Inc. projects that the market for software-based telecom operations support systems will reach $10.6 billion in 2003, up from $5.6 billion last year.
