After nearly two years of research and development, Winferno Software has launched its first two products.
The Boston-based business, which develops security tools, last week launched SecureIE for Internet Explorer browsers.
"The first two-plus years have been in R&D and product development," said Jon Lal, founder and chief executive of Winferno.
Lal, 34, spent the seven years prior to starting the business in investment management. Four of those years were at Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co. LLC (GMO), an investment firm with offices in Boston, London, Sydney and San Francisco.
"I ran a $500 million equity fund," he said.
While at GMO, Lal said, he got a macro-perspective of what was happening in the tech industry and how it was evolving.
"I followed the Microsoft-Netscape battle for control of the browser market in the late 1990s and I knew when the dust cleared there would be one dominant player."
That dominant player, Microsoft, has won the browser market and, according to Lal, 95 percent of Web surfers use Internet Explorer.
