By the time this issue is mailed to members, it is expected that a contract will be signed to sell the United Engineering Center, AIChE's headquarters office in New York City. As reported in last month's AIChExtra, proceeds of the sale will be distributed among the five organizations, including AIChE, that comprise the United Engineering Trustees (UET). It is expected that the buyer will raze the 18story structure and build luxury condominiums on the site.
Below are consensus answers-from the AIChE leaders who participated in the relocation decision-to a few questions regarding the sale that have arisen.
What prompted the expected sale of the building?
The United Engineering Trustees has regularly examined options related to the building's status. These studies were in recognition of the building's prime midtown location-with an unobstructed view of the waterfront and United Nations. New York's currently booming real estate market makes this an excellent time to sell the property. Additionally, the UET increasingly felt that the inefficiencies of the 36-yearold structure didn't fit the changing needs of the societies involved, resulting in poor utilization of the prime real estate on which it was located.
When will a mone take p)lace?
Assuming the sale is approved, all operations currently within the building must be relocated no later than September 30, 1998.
