I can think of no recent AIChE issue that has been more studied and examined than the decision to sell the United Engineering Center and remain in New York City. After considerable discussion of the merits of a number of options, Council decided that it was in the best interest of the Institute to remain in the New York City. A hasty move out of the city could have disrupted operations, jeopardized the sale, separated us from members and key partners, generated significant staff turnover, and depleted sale assets.
Let me emphasize that your elected representatives on Council, not AIChE staff, made the final decision.
The five Founder Societies-AIChE, AIME, ASCE, ASME, and IEEE-have outgrown the United Engineering Center. Due to the building's space constraints and operating inefficiencies, some associations elected to relocate operations, creating unoccupied space.
