At press time, Intel Corp., Softbank and Warner Music Group were planning to announce on July 1 investments in The Palace, a new privately held Internet company. The Palace will sell multimedia software that creates graphically enhanced virtual chat rooms on the Internet. The software's core was developed and released last year by Time Warner, but Intel is working to enhance future versions with audio and video technology developed at the company's Internet Technology Labs. Free trials of the software architecture are available at www.the palace.com. Financial details of the deal were unavailable at press time. Michael Maerz, former vice president of Intel's Internet and communications group, has joined the new company as president and CEO. (The Palace, 310/306-5630.) intermedia World, once considered the premiere multimedia trade show, is no more. Show sponsor Reed Exhibition Co. has decided to nix next year's show. A company spokesperson said the broad-based show "lost its focus" and no longer reflects the changing nature of the industry. Reed is considering launching a new show with more of an Internet and Intranet focus. It makes good sense considering Netscape Communications Corp.'s Developers' Conference, held directly across the street from the show last year, stole a lot of intermedia's thunder.
