Baldi and Brunak's popular Bioinformatics: The Machine Learning Approach is now in its second edition. The book gives a thorough introduction of the field of bioinformatics in its traditional sense. A theoretical introduction to the principles and methods that underlie the machine learning, or learning or modeling of data with the usage of few or no rules follows. The machine learning approach is especially suitable to the biological data that has arisen from the sequencing of many genomes, including the human genome, where the aim is to discover patterns in the vast sets of genetic data governed by complex rules. The inclusion of a new chapter on the exciting and rapidly progressing field of microarrays is a departure from the standard subset of biological problems that usually define traditional bioinformatics.
