Just as mental health care today has emerged from the shadows of shame and denial, the New York Psychiatric Institute's (NYPI) new building near the northern tip of Manhattan proudly offers a modern face for treatment and research. While psychiatric hospitals were once hidden within larger medical complexes or placed in buildings resembling fortresses, NYPI's new 312,000-square-foot home cuts a graceful profile on a prominent site looking onto the George Washington Bridge and the Hudson River.
