They met 12 years ago while working at a GE Aerospace plant in Syracuse, NY Since that time, Michael and Linda Katz have operated as a team. They got married, moved from job to job, city to city, always together.
"We are a package deal," Michael Katz said.
Last year, after years of working for some of the country's largest manufacturers, the Katzes decided to buy Molded Dimensions Inc., a small rubber and urethane products manufacturer in Port Washington.
The company has 64 employees, about $10 million in annual sales and runs a 31,000-square-foot plant at 701 Sunset Road. Molded Dimensions designs and manufactures custom molded natural synthetic rubber and liquid cast polyurethane products for more than 300 customers serving 30 different industries, ranging from medical to marine.
The Katzes purchased Molded Dimensions in April 2001 from Jay Meili, who wanted to retire but wasn't looking to sell to a large corporation, Michael Katz said.
Meili bought the company, then known as Robbins Plastic and Rubber Co., in 1969. He agreed to stay on as a technical consultant to the Katzes for five years after the sale.
The Katzes purchased the company mostly with bank debt. They declined to disclose the purchase price.
