May Lee Sayaxang earned a degree in social work in hopes of helping people. It wasnt until she started her company, Family Insurance & Financial Services, Milwaukee, that she believed she reached her goal.
As sole proprietor of the business, Sayaxang serves as a tax preparer, life insurance agent and mortgage facilitator.
"What I'm doing here is another part of the process of helping them," she said. "I'm here showing them you can earn a living and have a home."
During her six years in business, Sayaxang, a native of Laos, estimates she has worked with roughly 1,000 customers. Of those clients, some 90 percent are Hmong.
A significant part of her job entails teaching those who are new to the United States and its economic culture about the products and services she sells, Sayaxang said.
"I start with educating them about taxes and then shift to tax advantages and I steer them toward owning real estate," she said.
Sayaxang is getting firsthand experience with real estate of her own as she plans to buy a building at 3521 W. National Ave. to give her more room to grow.
