Jorge Ruedas de la Serna directs the Seminario de Critica Literaria of the UNAM, and this compilation is the product of work done mostly, but not exclusively, under his direction. It consists of 21 essays, each focusing on the work of one notable historian of Mexican letters. The first three essays discuss foreigners who wrote early about Mexican literature: two Spaniards, Jose Zorrilla and Joaquin Garcia Icazbalceta (the latter went on to become a major presence in late nineteenth-century Mexican literary scholarship), and a Cuban, Pedro Santacilia.
