The chronology below provides an overview of John Y. Cole's career and includes institutional, local, state, and national awards he has won for his leadership at the Library of Congress and for his book promotion activities carried out as director of the Center for the Book. Because Cole has published so extensively on the Library of Congress, the selected bibliography that follows will prove a valuable guide to scholars and students who can find information on every aspect of the Library, from scholarly studies of its history and beautifully illustrated publications on the art and architecture of the 1897 Jefferson Building to articles describing contemporary developments such as activities of the Center for the Book and large-scale digitization projects instigated by Librarian James Billington. Not included in the bibliography are sound recordings and Webcasts of more than one hundred Center for the Book programs moderated or introduced by Cole. The sound recordings are in the collections of the Library of Congress; the Webcasts are available at www .read.gov/webcasts.
In addition to dozens of scholarly books and book chapters and articles in publications such as Libraries & Culture and tlie Quarterly Journal of Library of Congress, Cole has edited numerous books and has contributed forewords, prefaces, and afterwords to many books dealing with the Library and with book and library history. He has written more than one hundred articles for the Library of Congress Information Bulletin, and it is through these articles that one can trace the ongoing development of the Center for the Book and contemporary activities of the Library. Cole's numerous historical articles for the bulletin include a series of brief studies published in honor of the Library's bicentennial, celebrated in 2000.
John Cole's bibliography, containing nearly four hundred publications, is organized into six thematic sections, with a chronological subarrangement within each section: "The Library of Congress: History and Development" (page 138), "Encyclopedia of the Library of Congress" (page 144), "Librarians of Congress and Other Library Staff' (page 145) , "The Center for the Book: History and Development" (page 147) , "The Center for the Book Viewpoint Series" (page 155), and "Other Publications and Contributions" (page 157).
