InnoMedia (San Jose, CA - 408-4325400, www.innomedia.com) sent us its newest single-user VolP device, InfoAccel. InfoAccel is a PCI card that slides into your PC and lets you make PCto-PC or PC-to-phone calls over the Internet. It's got two RJ-ii jacks: one for connecting an analog phone, and the other for connecting either to a dial-up modem, or (if a network connection is in place) to a POTS line jack in order to place and receive regular calls while online. The difference between this device and software-only clients (that you can typically download for free) is that InfoAccel lets you talk over an analog telephone instead of a microphone and speakers. The compression of the call is also more sophisticated, since the PCI card uses on-board DSPs.
We installed one InfoAccel card at our labs, using the LAN as our network connection, and one at the home of a helpful assistant with a cable modem. You can also use xDSL or a dial-up modem. After installing the card itself, a CD takes you through installation of the necessary drivers and the InfoAccel software client....
