THE QUEST OF IDENTITY IN AMIN MAALOUF- AN INTERCULTURAL WRITING / LA QUÊTE IDENTITAIRE CHEZ AMIN MAALOUF- UNE ECRITURE INTERCULTURELLE

Abstract

Since the apparition of the modern society the question of identity is enclosed into several interpretations. Initially the question of identity is considered as a mean of self-affirmation against the Other. The constituents of the identity formed the base of differentiation of the self from the other and of the similarity of the self with the other. These differentiation and similarity stem from an operation of centralization crystalized as an “identity” stable, fixe and petrified. With the arrival of postmodern era all the efforts of centralization were replaced by the play of decentralization and movement. The literature constitutes a field that includes several dimensions leading to a differentiation and deterritorialization. This research questions the quest of identity in Amin Maalouf through a writing of intercultural that reinforces an inherent inter-subjective dimension of the problem of identity. The literal discourse of Amin Maalouf, through his oeuvre entitled “ In the Name of Identity- Violence and the Need to Belong” which deals the question of identity that was strengthened by the author via an ethic, linguistic, social, esthetic and cultural reasoning trough an intercultural writing and literature, will deeply be examined by a contextual and thematic analysis.

La question de l’identité est cernée à plusieurs interprétations péremptoires depuis l’émergence de la société moderne. Elle a été initialement considérée comme un moyen de s’affirmer envers l’Autrui. Les constituants de l’identité formaient ce qui différenciait le soi de l’autre et de même ce qui le rendait similaire de l’autre. Cette différenciation et similitude étaient originaires d’une opération de centralisation qui se cristallisait comme « une identité » apte d’un fondement stable, fixe et pétrifiant. Alors que avec l’arrivée d’une ère postmoderne tout sorte de tache de centralisation s’est dégagée pour laisser la place à un jeu de décentralisation et de mouvance. Ce dynamique s’est fait ressentir le plus dans la littérature. La littérature est devenue un champ dans lequel « l’identité » se revêt plusieurs dimensions qui s’ouvrent vers une déterritorialisation et une différenciation. Cette étude porte sur la quête de l’identité chez Amin Maalouf à partir d’une écriture de l’interculturel qui renforce l’idée d’une dimension intersubjective inhérente à toute question identitaire. Le discours littéraire chez Maalouf sera décomposé en profondeur avec une méthode d’analyse contextuelle et thématique à partir de son œuvre intitulée « Les identités meurtrières » dans laquelle il décortique la question de l’identité par toute une série de raisonnement éthique, esthétique, social, linguistique et culturel.
