Abstract

This article reviews the concept of self-compassion, identifying its context and cultural background, distinguishing the different understandings on Buddhist culture and the western tradition influenced by modernity. In addition this article makes a review of the definition, from its inclusion in contemporary psychology. It also presents some preliminary evidence from studies on self-compassion, along with describing two programs that develop self-compassion in the clinical setting.

El presente artículo hace una revisión detallada del concepto de auto-compasión, identificando su contexto y origen cultural, distinguiendo las diferentes comprensiones en la cultura budista y la occidental tradicional influida por la modernidad, además de hacer una revisión de la definición, a partir de su inclusión en la psicología contemporánea. Se presentan algunas de las evidencias preliminares de los estudios sobre la auto-compasión, y se describen dos programas principales que lo desarrollan en el ámbito clínico.
