Gene Bernstein, the erudite educator, investor and golf promoter, is back with the family firm. Bernstein returns to Melville-based Northville Industries to manage day-to-day operations of the energy company's gas receiving, terminal and pipeline facilities and its wholesale supplying business.<P>For the past 11 years, Northville had leased its facilities in Port Jefferson, Setauket, Holtsville and Plainview to Houston-based ConocoPhillips. In the course of renegotiating the lease in June, Bernstein said, Northville decided to return to a direct role in the petroleum business on Long Island.<P>"It's exciting to actively be involved in the business again after such a long period," said Bernstein, 57, who will work side-by-side with his brother Jay. <P>The business should be up and running in October, once all operational permits are back in the Northville name, Bernstein said.<P> Founded as an East Side coal and ice delivery firm in 1917 by Bernstein's grandfather Samuel, the company moved into petroleum in a big way in 1956 when the founder's sons, Raymond and Harold, set up facilities in Riverhead's
