Every year approximately 140,000 people travel to the Allegheny Mountains near Pittsburgh to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, one of the most famous houses of the 20th century. Built in 1937 as a residence for department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann Sr., this symbol of modernity has been open to the public since the 1960s when it was donated by Kaufmann's son to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The fact that Fallingwater is structurally flawed and in danger of falling into Bear Run Creek has not decreased its number of admirers-it has only made it more fascinating. After the damage was discovered, the Conservancy installed a glass porthole in the floor enabling visitors to view the cracking beams below.
