School buys industrial land
McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., is putting up new buildings on its main campus and has recently purchased a former industrial site to serve as a research park.
However, the university is facing a looming challenge in terms of deferred maintenance costs.
On the positive side, construction has begun on a $30-million, 150,000-square-foot athletic/recreation centre.
"It will house a double gym, a large fitness area, four squash courts, a physiotherapy area, offices and an indoor running track," says Robert Dunn, assistant director of McMaster's physical plant department. "Construction started a month ago. It should be ready in September 2006. Currently it is a stripped site. Right now they are doing a lot of sewer and utilities work."
