BORDEN, P.E.I. (CP)--Hundreds of Confederation Bridge workers turned out to see their names immonalized in stone. With their families by their sides, the men and women who built the 12.9-kilometre span linking Prince Edward Island with mainland Canada gathered around the bridge segment symbolizing the hard work and dedication that made the historic project possible. Surrounding the monument are 5,500 clay bricks, each inscribed with the name of almost every man and woman who spent so much as one day working on the bridge project between 1993 and 1997. More than 6,000 worked on the project. About 500 members of the world media received accreditation for the three-day megafestival they call BridgeFest '97. Strait Crossing used the day to say thank-you to the workers. I've been in the construction business for more than 30 years, but this is the best damn crew of people I have ever worked with," Paul Giannelia, project manager with Strait Crossing Development Inc., said last Thursday.
