Pikes Peak region construction activity took an upturn in March with higher valuations and more building permits. The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department reported more than $79.9 million worth of building permits approved in March, up from February's $63 million and January's $69.5 million.
Nearly $59.5 million in new housing construction made up the bulk of March's permits, up from February's $43.3 million. Of the 468 housing permits approved in March, 293 were for single-family homes, compared to 321 new single-family home permits in February. March saw 66 new townhomes and several large apartment complexes begin construction.
New stores and other retail buildings dominated commercial construction, reporting more than $7.4 million worth of building of the $11.4 million total permit valuation in the category.
Colorado Structures Inc. pulled more than $5.3 million worth of new retail permits for the new Home Depot at Woodmen Road and Powers Boulevard. The 121,377-square-foot store in the Powers Pointe Center will join a new Wal-Mart Superstore to be built there.
