Dell 5100MP
If you want a sure sign that SXGA+ resolution is finally coming into the mainstream, look no further than the Dell 5100MP projector. The DLP model is the company's new premium projector and, along with SXGA+ resolution (1,400 x 1,050 pixels), it has high brightness, high contrast and a relatively affordable price tag.
As of last year, SXGA+ projectors held less than 1 percent of the market, according to industry tracker Pacific Media Associates, and most of these were big, bulky, expensive projectors made for specialty installation applications. But like the Canon Realis SX50, an SXGA+ projector that began shipping this past spring (and reviewed in this column in June), the Dell 5100MP is being marketed to business presenters, educators and other users who need a manageablesize projector with more resolution than the current industry standard XGA (1,024 x 768 pixels).
Indeed, an SXGA+ projector displays 47 percent more pixels than an XGA machine, jumping from XGA's 786,432 pixels to 1,470,000 pixels. In our tests with the Dell 5100MP, the extra detail was immediately discernable. Spreadsheets, detailed graphics, fine images and...
