Amy Jacques Garvey was the second wife of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the organizer and leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA). Founded in their homeland of Jamaica in 1914 and transplanted to New York City two years later, the UNIA grew into the largest mass movement among people of African descent in the twentieth century.
