Building on the work of earlier ethnohistorians, recent archaeological findings, oral traditions, and documents produced by white observers, Robbie Ethridge offers a fascinating perspective on cultural exchanges between the southeastern Creeks and other Americans, emphasizing the ecological context in which the exchanges occurred. She focuses on the period 1796-1816, when Benjamin Hawkins was United States agent to the tribe, and draws heavily on his published and unpublished letters and journals as well as on the accounts of John Bartram and Bernard Romans.
