This interdisciplinary collection of essays written by archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians originated in a symposium held at the University of Mississippi in 1998. The objective of the symposium was to reevaluate 11 the transformation of the native peoples of the Southeast" from the first Spanish entrada into the region up through the Yamassee war in 1715. Research on southeastern Indian archaeology and ethnohistory has thrived in the past two decades as scholars have reinterpreted the region's history through thorough and contextualized readings of Spanish and French documents.
