A design by Dublin-based landscape architect Desmond Fitzgerald and artist Sean Hillen has been commissioned by Omagh District Council as a memorial to the Omagh bombing atrocity. The team's design won a competition to create a memorial marking the 10th anniversary of the car bomb explosion in Market Street, Omagh, whkh killed 31 people and injured 412. The brief said the memorial had to be located on two sites about 300m apart. The main feature of the winning design, supported by consultancy White Young Green, is a garden of light formed by lines of small mirrors on poles. Another mirror in the garden tracks the sun and pours a beam of sunlight on to the 31 mirrors, which are arranged to carry light down the road onto a heartshaped sculpture at the bomb site. The heart is a cut-glass crystal that appears to float inside a pillar of glass. Omagh Memorial Working Group chairman Danny McSorley said: "The inclusion of mirror technology gives the design a modernity that reflects the desire of this community to move forward in a positive and progressive manner."
