Vulcan Materials
Vulcan Materials Co., based in Birmingham, Ala., announced that it has acquired the R.C. Buffer Co., which owns a limestone quarry on the West Side of San Antonio. The quarry will now be operated by Vulcan's Southwest Division. Donald M. James, Vulcan's chairman and chief executive officer, says the acquisition is a valuable addition to Vulcan's long-term limestone reserves for San Antonio and surrounding counties. Details of the deal were not disclosed.
Southwestern Bell
The Texas Department of Economic Development approved a Smart Jobs Fund grant of $1.5 million for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. to train 3,432 employees. The grant will be used to train workers throughout the state in technician services and to provide necessary skills to support new technology used by the telecommunications industry.
Baseball Express
Baseball Express Inc., based in San Antonio, is acquiring Houston-based Softball Sales, a direct retailer of brand name softball equipment and apparel. The deal will make Baseball Express the world's largest baseball and softball direct retailer, says Rich Covyeau, president and chief executive officer of Baseball Express.
