Shell is a company that has pioneered the use of enterprise wikis. As early as 2006, its global KM team launched a corporate wiki - Shell Wiki - in order to provide both a platform for operational business know-how and to enhance knowledge sharing.
Three years later, Shell Wiki is still going strong. It has become a global encyclopedia for the company and plays a key role in learning and competence development. It's accessed by almost 60,000 users across Shell and has over 3,000 editors.
On average, around 100 new wikis are launched every week, organized by topic. This article describes the development of a wiki portal designed to capture and communicate information relating to "Operational Excellence". The content also includes process guides and manuals, training material, and learnings and best practices, complete with operational examples.
A core team (the Operational Excellence Program Office) is responsible for the delivery of the project. It's also responsible for managing and co-ordinating the reviews that Shell carries out annually to measure asset performance against the standard.
To choose the most suitable platform(s) to store and disseminate Operational Excellence-related information, it was important to consider both Information Management (IM) compliance (document and...
