Backup management packages for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT Server have existed for some time, but Cheyenne Software Inc. has begun shipping ARCserve for Windows NT, the first of a new class of these packages that takes broad advantage of the multitasking, multithreading capabilities of Microsoft's network operating system.
We looked at Cheyenne's product and teamed it with a fast, high-capacity tape drive from Colorado Memory Systems Inc., the Loveland, Colo.-based subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard Co.
We installed both products on a prerelease version of Windows NT 3.51 and then attached the NT file server to an existing network supporting 20 workstations and two Novell NetWare file servers, one running NetWare 4.1, the other, version 3.12. The objective was to see how well Cheyenne's product would fare when faced with the kind of mixed environment common in the real world of corporate computing.
We found that while some parts of the test environment were outside the range of products supported by ARCserve, the setup worked well, backups were fast and the product was robust and easy to use. These results emerged in part because the platform was running NT, but it was clear that both Colorado Memory Systems and Cheyenne had done their homework when designing a high-end backup solution that would fit well into most enterprise environments.
