Shiva Corp. is enhancing its NetModem and LanRover lines of remote-access products, giving them faster connectivity options with built-in modems and speedier and more reliable remote networking.
Both the NetModem/E and the LanRover/4E provide dial-in and dial-out access. Shiva's bundled management software uses Point-to-Point Protocol to talk to both products, which means that as far as network operating systems are concerned, it's protocol-independent.
In fact, you can use several protocols at once, so the same benefit can carry over from network operating systems into client operating systems.
We tried the Shiva products with Novell NetWare, but they can be used with several network-compatible operating systems, including Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT and Windows 95, according to Shiva.
Functions & Features
We found Shiva's remote-access products to be fast, well-rounded and reliable, as well as easy to install and manage. One area in which Shiva is still missing a solution, however, is Novell's NetWare Directory Services, found in the much-marketed NetWare 4.1. You'll find a fix for this in a product update later this year.
The NetModem/E 28.8 is about the size of a cigar box and attaches directly to your existing Ethernet LAN via either a 10Base-T or 10Base2 cable connection.
