We Came and Conquered: The Complexities of Viking Metal Music and Culture

Abstract

“Viking metal” is a genre infused with romantic ideology beckoning to the past via Norse mythology, folklore, folk elements, paganism and the Viking Age. Aficionados embrace and immerse themselves in Nordic ideology and culture out of fascination and respect. This paper seeks to highlight particular aspects of Viking metal music including a survey of the origins of Viking metal, its cultural roots and meanings, controversies surrounding the music, and musical elements (i.e. instrumentation and playing styles in Viking metal, followed by an investigation of the lyrics). Lastly, the thesis will deal with the expansion of the fanbase beyond Scandinavia, in particular amoung Latinx fans in the U.S., Mexico and other regions of Latin America.

"Viking metal" es un género infundido con ideología romántica que hace señas al pasado a través de la mitología nórdica, el folclore, los elementos populares, el paganismo y la era vikinga. Los aficionados se abrazan y se sumergen en la ideología y cultura nórdicas por fascinación y respeto. Este documento busca resaltar aspectos particulares de la música de metal vikingo, incluyendo un estudio de los orígenes del metal vikingo, sus raíces y significados culturales, las controversias que rodean a la música y los elementos musicales (es decir, instrumentación y estilos de juego en el metal vikingo, seguido de una investigación de la letra). Por último, la tesis tratará la expansión de la base de fans más allá de Escandinavia, en particular entre los fanáticos de Latinx en los Estados Unidos, México y otras regiones de América Latina.
