Internet Security Systems Inc. last week extended the reach of its adaptive network security product suite to protect Windows desktops and servers from security breaches. Systems Scanner 1.0 for Windows runs a series of system security tests to audit designated servers and desktops, identifying weaknesses that could be exploited by hackers. Systems Scanner checks system characteristics including login permissions, registry settings, user and group passwords, andsecurity settings for applications such as Microsoft's Internet Information Server. The scanner also can check for user-related security risks such as uncertain Java and ActiveX settings, or the use of dial-in modems that may bypass an organization's firewall. The scanner is available now. A single server costs $695; a single desktop license, $50. A 10-user server license costs $6,250; a 10- user desktop license sells for $450.
