When Sam Stroum died March 10 at the age of 79, he left behind a remarkable philanthropic record that will leave its impact on the region for generations.
Stroum who died after an 11-month battle with pancreatic cancer, was known to many as the ultimate philanthropist. But there was a lot more to the man who was born and raised in Waltham, Mass., a city roughly 20 miles west of Boston.
He was also a role model, teacher and mentor, as well as a devoted, friend, trustee and benefactor.
The essence of the man is contained in a phrase Stroum himself often quoted, "It all boils down to what's in your head and your heart, not what's in your wallet." Both Stroum and his wife of 58 years, Althea, liked to quote...
