The way Kevin Chang figured it, somebody would hit it big by devising a product that would easily transfer data from one computer to another.
Why not him?
"In the worst case, I could fail," recalled Chang, a softwareindustry veteran. "I thought it was worth the gamble."
So, lacking a business plan and without any financial backing, Chang quit his job and began his quest. In 1999, he and partner Larry Mana'o founded Detto Technologies Inc. in Bellevue. The company's core product, IntelliMover, helps consumers move data and customized personal settings from one computer to another.
The product transfers all files, folders, email, address books, bookmarks, favorites, dictionaries and all settings, including screen savers and Internet connection settings, onto a new computer. Most PC migration tools give little or no choice in what's being transferred, so everything is moved onto a new PC, whether the user wants it there or not.
