Gao and Ting-Toomey have written a scholarly review of intercultural communication literature, which focuses on the Chinese. It is not a practical handbook for American sojourners like Wenzhong and Grove's Encountering the Chinese (now in its second edition, The Intercultural Press, 1998).

I recommend Communicating Effectively with the Chinese for introduction to intercultural communication classes, and for international students in any area of communication. This book has great potential for attracting many more Chinese-speaking students to study in our field.
