There's money to be made and jobs to be filled in San Diego's commercial real estate industry from property managers, to directors of real estate, to appraisers.
Maryjo Highland of Highland and Associates, a national, mainly retail commercial real estate recruiter based in San Diego, said good property managers are always in demand.
"Property management is probably the most difficult of all the jobs in commercial real estate. Keeping people fresh is problematic," she said. "The (property management) business itself is dealing with problems every single day."
Typical salaries, she said, range from the low $50,000s for an assistant property manager to the high $80,000s for a full-fledged property manager.
She said there's less volatility in finding and keeping directors of real estate, real estate managers, project managers and construction managers - which she also recruits for retail and restaurant positions.
Highland was able to parlay her own contacts and institutional knowledge, made during 12 years as a retail broker for CB Commercial, into starting this niche business.
Sixty percent of her business is in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange counties.
Mary Ann Moore, president of Carlsbadbased Mary Ann Moore & Associates, runs a small national commercial real estate headhunter service, specializing in retail real estate development. Between 10 and 15 percent of her business in the San Diego area.
She said she's seen a growth in demand here for directors and managers of real estate, vice presidents of real estate, construction and project managers, and real estate legal support.
