An Orkin Pest Control commercial that features a realistic-looking cockroach crawling across the screen is proving to be a little too real for some viewers. According to media reports, at least two people threw things at the uninvited pest, damaging their TVs. Titled "Fake Out," the spot, which began airing across the U.S. in March, begins as an ad for a fictional fabric softener before a roach starts its crawl. Ultimately, an Orkin worker appears and sprays the bug, causing it to fall off the screen. Orkin and its agency, J. Walter Thompson, both in Atlanta, report they have received dozens of calls from irate and amused viewers. A woman from Greensboro, Md., says she woke up two neighbours late at night to come to her house to hunt and kill the roach. Another Tampa, Fla. woman heaved her motorcycle helmet at the bug, damaging her set. Orkin declined her request for a replacement TV. For Canadians interested in viewing the spot, it is available on the Ad Critic Web site at http://www.adcritic.com.
