One of the most intriguing and sophisticated art forms of the Spanish Golden Age, the Byzantine novel has received relatively little scholarly attention over the years. The present work is thus a welcomed attempt to fill the void in this area of critical research. A revised and pruned version of the more-than-one thousand-page doctoral dissertation completed at the University of Barcelona in 1994, this book provides an exhaustive treatment of the genesis, traits, and evolution of the Byzantine genre from classical antiquity to the end of the Golden Age with a brief look even at the manifestations of the genre in the eighteenth century.
