Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. again has solidified its hold on the portable-PC market, according to the July CRN reseller poll.
The Irvine, Calif.-based company was cited as the best-selling notebook-PC manufacturer by 24 percent of 202 reseller respondents, up 9 percentage points from the previous month and the highest figure since April.
"Toshiba has an extensive product line that hits all the pricing points and stays at the leading edge of technology," said Joel Allen, owner of Allen Publishing, a reseller in Ardmore, Pa. "Toshiba also beats its competitors in the area of marketing. We get much better marketing materials from Toshiba than from IBM."
The company appears to have regained a strong edge over its rivals, after slipping in the previous two months. Texas Instruments Inc., Dallas, was second to Toshiba in the July poll, named by 9 percent of resellers. NEC Technologies Inc., Boxboro, Mass., followed with 8 percent. The IBM PC Co., Somers, N.Y., and Apple Computer Inc., Cupertino, Calif., were next with 7 percent each.
This is the first time TI and NECT have appeared near the top of the best-seller list. Moreover, IBM's share declined sharply for the second straight month and was the lowest recorded by the poll since December. Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, received a record low 3 percent share of reseller votes.
