THE POWERPC PLATFORM, also known as CHRP or Common Hardware Reference Platform, is coming-it is just late.
Executives of the PowerPC AIM Alliancewhich is made up of IBM Corp., Motorola Inc. and Apple Computer Inc.-met with analysts and developers at Macworld Expo in Boston earlier this month to outline the CHRP timeline and reveal their technical road map for the PowerPC chip. The three partners hope that the road map and platform will help to jumpstart the fledgling Macintosh-clone market.
CHRP-which is a reference hardware platform that both OEMs and VARs can refer to in order to build Macintosh clones-will open up access to PC peripherals and the Macintosh operating system, said George Scalise, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple. OEMs then can refer to the hardware platform and will not have to seek Apple's permission to make clone machines, he said.
