INTEL CORP.'S upcoming Klamath microprocessor will not be any faster than the existing 200MHz Pentium Pro, said several OEMs working with the new chip.
Klamath is expected to be introduced in April with a clock speed of 233MHz and is supposed to offer 10 percent to 15 percent performance gains. But the OEMs said they did not see such gains.
Klamath, which combines MMX multimedia technology with the Pentium Pro, originally was scheduled to be introduced in March, but Intel last week delayed the introduction, said one OEM executive briefed by Intel. Intel publicly has said only that the chip will ship in the first half of 1997.
The 200MHz Pentium P55C chip, which also contains MMX, will be introduced on Jan. 8.
