SUN MICROSYSTEMS INC. will get earlier access to information on Intel Corp.'s 64-bit Merced chip as part of a deal it struck last week with NCR Corp.
NCR said Solaris on Intel is now its reference platform for 64-bit Unix (CRN Online, Aug. 1).
The Dayton, Ohio-based company dropped plans to work with HewlettPackard Co. and The Santa Cruz Operation Inc. on 64-bit Unix, although it will continue to offer UnixWare, Windows NT and its own Unix MP-RAS as 32-bit platforms.
Instead, NCR will incorporate missioncritical features from Unix MP-RAS into Solaris 2.7, which will be 64-bit. Solaris will be offered on NCR's 4300 WorldMark servers starting this quarter.
