Notebook computers are every bit as susceptible to hard-drive failures, clumsy users and viruses as desktop computers. And like their big brothers, they are just as likely not to be properly backed up.
CMS Peripherals offers a solution for backing up notebook computers with the Automatic Backup System (ABS). It's useful for file archiving as well as restoring an entire hard drive in case of disaster. Engineers tested a 6-Gbyte version of the unit, though different capacities are available.
Basically a small hard drive with an attached PC Card interface, this 7-ounce device shines largely because of the included software that initiates an automatic backup each time the ABS unit is plugged into a PC Card slot. An optional USB-to-PC Card converter allows the transfer of data from a notebook to a desktop.
