LANDING ON LINUX.: Aerospace giant gives open-source OS a test flight
WITH TASKS RANGING from building jetliners to sending men into space, Boeing Co. does not take chances with technology.
With that in mind, the Seattie-based aerospace giant recently undertook a major review of the Linux operating system to see if it could work within the structure of its global enterprise.
The company returned a split verdict on Linux following the topto-bottom review, while continuing to work with IBM Global Services for integration and Microsoft Corp. and its partners for other support, said Boeing executives.
"We are evaluating Linux as a potential operating system for use within Boeing," said Beverly Clark, a communications manager at the company's IT unit.
"We keep an eye on any emerging technologies that show promise for the Boeing Company," Clark said.
