Developer Joe Hernon, who already announced plans to build Oakland's tallest residential skyrise at 1640 Broadway, is planning another 90 condominiums at Harrison and 14th streets.
Plans for the project are still being finalized and will likely be submitted to the city of Oakland next month, said Marge Cafarelli, a principal at Urban Developments and a consultant on the project.
Hernon, 34, is a relatively unknown developer. A native of Galway, Ireland, he came to California at the age of 20 and worked as a carpenter in the construction industry. By 1990 he was operating his own company, Hernon Construction, which focused on residential development. In the last four years, Hernon evolved into a development company and changed its name to Hernon Group. With younger brothers, Tim and John, Hernon's new company has developed four San Francisco live/work projects for a total of 80 units.
He has since sold all the projects and is investing some of the proceeds in the Oakland buildings.
Hernon said he is shifting his development focus away from San Francisco.
