Background: Before joining Wells Fargo last year, he was chief financial officer at New York Life Insurance Co. Prior to joining New York Life in 1996, he was chief financial officer at Midlantic Corp., where he worked on a turnaround that culminated in the New Jersey bank being acquired by PNC Bank Corp. He also worked at Chase Manhattan Bank for 17 years, eventually becoming corporate treasurer.

Essential business philosophy: I'm a big believer in focusing on the customer. Even CFOs have customers if you broadly define it as the bank's customers plus internal customers who depend on finance functions. There are other external parties that we interact with including investors, analysts, rating agencies and regulators.
