Benazir Bhutto, the first woman ever elected to lead a Muslim state, was Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1996. She chaired the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), a center-left party. Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007, after leaving a PPP rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, two weeks before the general election, where she was the leading opposition candidate.
