COMPOSITION COMPETITIONS
MTNA-Alfred Music Elementary Composition Competition
Winner: Kyle Yeung, Southwest Division (California); Carlton Liu, teacher
Kyle Yeung is 10 years old and has won numerous piano competitions since age 5. He won first place at SYMF, Stravinsky Awards Bach International Competition, Glendale Piano Competition, Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition and Great Composers Series. At age 7, he won first place at CAPMT Young Musicians Concerto Competition. Kyle performed at Carnegie Hall as first prize winner of AFAF, Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition and the AADGT International Young Gifted Musicians Festival.

MTNA-Alfred Music Junior Composition Competition
Winner: William Blind, Southwest Division (New Mexico); Michael Mauldin, teacher
William Blind, 12, is a 7th-grader at Madison Middle School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and studies with internationally renowned composer Michael Mauldin at the New Mexico School of Music. William began playing piano by ear and composing as a toddler and started formal music lessons at age six with his father, Lawrence Blind. William also enjoys playing percussion and keyboard in his school's Jazz Band and Symphonic Band, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Junior Band.

MTNA Senior Composition Competition
Winner: Holden Mui, East Central Division (Illinois); Matthew Hagle, teacher
Holden Mui is a sophomore attending Naperville North High School. He was also the 2016 MTNA Junior division composition winner. He studies piano and music theory with Kate Nir and Matt Hagle, respectively. Besides music, he also enjoys competition math and attended the 2018 Math Olympiad Program.

MTNA Young Artist Composition Competition
Winner: Josiah Sprankle, West Central Division (Missouri); Chen Yi, teacher
Josiah Sprankle is a dual-degree student in composition and piano performance at the University of Kansas City-Missouri. A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Josiah draws inspiration from many sources, including bluegrass, electronica, jazz, Christian hymnody, and Western classical music.
