Many commentators - and most developers in the thick of things have noted that there was an undeniable shift in terms of complexity and functionality in SQL Server 2005 compared with previous iterations of the system. That's to be welcomed, of course, as it represents the addition of a host of enterprise-class functions. But it also means a steep learning curve, even for those exposed to previous versions of the product.
This hook should help. It's a serious effort by no fewer than seven contributors, all of them previously published writers or experts in all things SQL Server. In an effort to encompass the topic, the text (nearly 700 pages, complemented by an extensive index) covers the world of Microsoft database programming options, productivity, database management and analysis.
Starting from installation and management, the text delves in detail into the T-SQL programming language, working and integrating with both .Net and XML, reporting, analysis and security, before diving into service brokering, automation and monitoring aspects and even notes on database mirroring.
The authors have genuinely taken pains to include concrete examples along the way (we were particularly struck with the work done in the programming assemblies section, a notoriously tricky subject for the novice SQL Server devotee). Though not as examoriented as some of this month's other choices, this Ls probably the book that will stand on your shelves longest as there is enough here even when you have achieved a more expert status.
