UK portal ShopGuide plans to launch a BargainFinder site, a price-comparison trend predicted to snowball
"The Internet will fundamentally reshape capitalism." Thus spoke Rod Schrock, chief executive of the Compaq-owned AltaVista Web portal a fortnight ago, as he justified the multibillion dollar price tag on his business.
But a key element in digitallyenhanced capitalism will involve the radical reshaping of shopping habits. And who, hand on heart, can claim that online shopping is a pleasure?
For most surfers, trying to find your shopping quarry involves a time-consuming, laborious process of backing in and out of a series of individual e-commerce sites with pen and paper in hand to jot down the best prices.
Too often, shopping online still provides little, or no cost or time saving compared to using the phone or pounding the high street. But that could be changing.
