Taipei, Taiwan - A group led by investors from Taiwan has formed a wafer foundry joint venture and intends to break ground this year on an 8-in. wafer fabrication facility in Silicon Valley.
Silicon Valley Semiconductor Corp. (SVSC) will begin work on a large-scale wafer fab in or near San Jose by midyear, and expects to start production there by the end of 1997, according to analysts in Taiwan and sources close to the company.
SVSC's decision to locate in Silicon Valley is unusual because California hasn't been a choice site for fabrication facilities for years; most new fabs are now built in less-expensive states. But SVSC's strategy is similar to that of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co....
