Intel Corp. made it official that the company is discontinuing its desktop Pentium III processor, with the last orders to be accepted on Dec. 7. A notice the Santa Clara, Calif., company sent to customers said all PIII orders will become noncancelable after Oct. 12. PIII continues as a mobile and server processor, and the recently introduced Tualatin 0.13-micron PIII-M mobile chip will come out later this year as part of the desktop Celeron value line. Despite the immediate plan to discontinue the desktop PIII, the chips could stay in production until January or February 2003 to fulfill existing orders. Intel is also discontinuing the 800 and 850MHz flip-chip PGA- packaged Celeron on the same timetable as the desktop PIII.
